Scare Away Hunger

Many years ago, two local young men decided they wanted to host a haunted house in the backyards of their own neighborhood. They also wanted this event to benefit their local food bank.

Deven Thorne and Ryan Rose rallied their friends and other community members and together work to “Scare Away Hunger.”

This simple grassroots event gives the community an opportunity for a good scare and also the chance to contribute to helping those that struggle to make ends meet.

For more information regarding Scare Away Hunger or how you can start a Halloween outreach in your community, give the Food Bank a call 530-621-9950 or email info@foodbankedc.org.

Summer Spectacular

Although the Food Bank of El Dorado County serves the county as a whole, its distribution facility is centrally located in Cameron Park, Ca.  Years ago the Cameron Park Community Service folks offered the Food Bank an opportunity to partner with them on their Annual Summer Spectacular event.

The Food Bank, as the designated charity, would receive one dollar for each three dollar ticket sold for the annual firework celebration. In Turn the Food bank agreed to provide 30 volunteers to assist with the operations of Summer Spectacular.

Another “win-win” unique community partnership that shows that the Food Bank is not only a food distribution agency, but also a grass roots charity that truly cares about the community as a whole.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer for Summer Spectacular contact the Food Bank at 530-621-9950 or info@foodbankedc.org.

What We Do

Our Response To COVID-19

Over a year and a half ago, regional shelter-in-place orders went into effect. As an essential business, the Food Bank of El Dorado County immediately leapt into action to safely and efficiently serve its neighbors in need. The need for our services has only grown and the way we operate has changed in new andexciting ways.

We have experienced some disruption in food donations from our regular food industry donors and are supplementing donated food with food purchases of specific items. The Coronavirus crisis has resulted in unplanned expenses for the Food Bank. Please consider donating here.

Anyone associated with the Food Bank’s activity, including volunteers, clients and staff members are encouraged to follow the health recommendations from federal, state, and local officials. If you are a family or individual in need of food assistance, call 530-621-9950 or find a partner agency serving food here.

About The Food Bank of El Dorado County

One might ask, who is The Food Bank of El Dorado County and where did they come from?

food bank buildingIn 1999 a local grassroots organization called The El Dorado Food Coalition—comprised of a handful of faith-based organizations—worked to provide food assistance in El Dorado County. Although this group worked hard they struggled with infrastructure, cold and dry storage, trucks, and all the necessities it takes to service a rural county like El Dorado. As needs grew the Coalition’s goal quickly became establishing a full-service food bank, as El Dorado County was one of the few California counties that had no food bank. With the help of a few key organizations and the assistance of the community The Food Bank of El Dorado County was established in August of 2000.

Starting off small, The Food Bank supporters put their nose to the grindstone, and from a humble beginning this charity has become the largest collaborative charity in El Dorado County. The Food Bank provides food assistance through multiple programs including the Emergency Food Assistance Network which consists of multiple agencies that make up the safety net for El Dorado County’s at-risk population.

In an average year this collaborative partnership procures and distributes over 3 million dollars of emergency food assistance to communities through the county.

Congratulations, El Dorado Food Coalition—The Food Bank of El Dorado County has become a gold nugget for our neighbors who struggle to make ends meet.

Celebrating our 20th Anniversary

For over 20 years, on a monthly basis, the Food Bank of El Dorado County’s Emergency Food Assistance Network collaboratively serves thousands of at-risk.

At the same time the Food Bank has been feeding the hungry, the Board of Directors and Food Bank staff have been working on infrastructure for the future. A new distribution facility was built in 2013 that acts as the hub to this network that serves El Dorado County as a whole. The building, cold and dry storage, and refrigerated trucks are the exact necessities that the El Dorado Food Coalition dreamed about in the 1990’s.

If you want to talk about one fact that simply says it all- drum roll please- over the last 20 years the Food Bank of El Dorado County has solicited, procured, warehoused, and distributed over 50 million dollars’ worth of food right here in our own backyards.
